Stop Crying, Start Doing

All to often I hear people complaining about how they wish they had this, or how they wish they had that. They wish they were skinny.  They wish they could find the perfect someone.  They wish they had their dream job.  They wish they made more money. We have all heard these people.  Maybe you are one of these people.  To these people I like to ask, “what steps have you taken to get what you want?”

They usually seem baffled by the question.  It is as if they want to live the exact same life they have now, but just add on the item of their desire. “Work for it? You want me to work on being skinny?  You want me to try to get that dream job?” Warning: This might burst your bubble.  If you want something, you have to go for it.  You need to make a plan to achieve it, and then start doing it.  If you think you are going to get skinny eating chocolate and pizza, think again.  That celebrity that you see that is in great shape is probably paying a trainer to force them run laps they don’t want to run, and do pushups they don’t want to do. Getting into shape does not require magic, it requires sweating and sacrificing.

If you want that dream job, you might need to go back to school.  If you already have the education, you might need to start networking, making some phone calls, applying for jobs, and going on interviews.  Complaining to your best friend about how you are so much better at this job than so and so is not going to get you the job. Again, its not magic.  Get up and make some moves.

Whatever you are dreaming for, if you aren’t taking steps to achieve it, you need to realize that you are fooling yourself.  Coming to grips with this will free up a lot of the time you spend day dreaming.

You have one life to live. Why not have it be awesome? Why not have everything you dream of.  You can have it.  Repeat: YOU CAN HAVE IT. You just need to do something about it.  Dreaming is very powerful, but only when coupled with action. Chart out the steps to success and take them on, one by one.  It might take a while.  It might take years.  If you are going to live those years anyway, you might as well reach your goal.

Take out a pen and paper. Jot down your dream. Break it down piece by piece.  One day, you will thank yourself for taking this action.

You can do it.

P.S. If you need to cry, go ahead and cry. There is no shame in that. Cry until you can’t cry anymore.  Then stop crying and start doing.
